Alone again… naturally

July 3, 2014

Took a hike with The Pupster Tuesday, late afternoon. Went again this morning, first thing. I spend too many hours on social media so I try to get unplugged, alone time every day.

Lucky for me, there are lots of nearby places to wander into and lose your mind. Also lucky I appreciate these hills. Speaking of which, green’s a cool color, but this golden thing we’ve got going on right now, is awesome.

Mount Tam morning

This thistle can’t whistle or tweet. But it’s cool

Way up there

Way up there

Do you see a dog?

Heading back before the coyotes come out

Home again. Sweaty. Restored. Grateful.

Day 8 Kindness and Respect Challenge (Plea to the Goddess of Patience)

October 8, 2013

Sorry, Mom. You still love me, right?

The Pupster was crazed this morning. Pulling on the bedspread. Chewing on my sock. Biting my yoga mat. Jumping on the table. Barking at squirrels. Barking at trucks. Barking at me! And through it all, I breathe and tried to re-center while I answered email, prepped for my 10 o’clock call, cooked oatmeal. But Gracie  wasn’t calmed. Neither was I.

I tried to distract her by tossing the orange ball. The short red ropey toy. The long pink and black ropey toy. The  squeaky toy. The deer antler that we just spent $15 on. Nothing worked for more than a couple of minutes. Then I barked at David… LOUDLY: “I’ve got a 10 o’clock. She needs to get her ya-yas out. Take her for a run. Now!”

Ahhhhh… they’re gone now. My call went well. The living is quiet. All I hear is the bubbling of the fish tank filter. Life is good. I feel so much kinder and more respectful. I will show them when they come back. Hopefully not too soon.

Friday the 13th – Luck off!

September 13, 2013

Friday the 13th. An unlucky day? I’m not so sure.

You know the story of the Chinese peasant farmer whose only son was thrown by a wild horse and badly injured? Downright unlucky, wouldn’t you say? The farmer’s wife thought so. She was beside herself lamenting the family’s misfortune. Neighbors gathered to commiserated, “How unfortunate!” they said. The injured son’s response was not recorded, but the farmer was philosophical (as fictional peasant farmers often are) “Fortunate or unfortunate. I don’t know. Let’s wait and see.”

Two days later the Emporer’s soldiers came by with orders to draft all able-bodied men into the army. But because the farmer’s son was still nursing several broken bones, he got a pass. The farmer’s wife was ecstatic. “How fortunate we are!” The neighbors, most of whose sons had been conscripted, once again agreed, “Yes, you are very fortunate.”

But the farmer, wasn’t ready to weigh in. All he said was, “Fortunate or unfortunate. Don’t know. Let’s wait and see.”

Maybe you get where this is going. If you want to take the trip anyway read the rest of the story.

Brownies?! How lucky!

I don’t believe in luck. Stuff happens. We can’t know how it’s going to turn out.
Like today, for instance: My neighbor called to ask me to please take in her mail while she’s away. I said, “Sure thing.” And she probably thought, “How fortunate!” To show her gratitude she said, “I’ve just made brownies. On our way out, I’ll leave some inside your gate.” I thanked her and thought, “How fortunate!” And that’s all I thought, until…..

Some time later, my writing was interrupted by a CRUNCHING sound coming from the living room. I continued writing until a moment later when the sound intruded a second time. Upon investigating I found Gracie, our 5 month old puppy, chomping on a plastic lid. I got it away from her thinking, “Lucky I heard that. She could have swallowed those piece!”

As I was tossing out the bits of chewed up Tupperware I realized where little Gracie snagged that lid from. Racing downstairs to the gate, I saw… nothing in the spot where the brownies should have been!

Yikes! Dogs. Chocolate. Toxic. Double YIKES!!

It is now about 2 and a half hours later. Our puppy made a trip to the vet, where vomiting was induced. Then they gave her another drug to stop the vomiting. Plus intravenous fluids to keep her hydrated. The vet said she ate a lot of chocolate and it was a really good thing… a very fortunate thing, that I quickly put dog+chocolate together and got EMERGENCY.

Is it unfortunate that we’re not eating brownies for dessert tonight? I don’t think so.
Gracie is fine, so we’re fine.
Happy Friday the 13th.

Sometimes less independence is a good thing

July 1, 2013

Last June our sweet Josie dog died at age three. Ate something on a hike in the woods. Gone 30 minutes later.

A part of me broke that day. Stayed badly broken for six months.

Then the healing began and the yearning… for a dog. But we held off because being dog-less has its perks. No mandatory walks in the rain. No Poop Patrol in the backyard. No ticks. No need to vacuum. (OK, we still vacuum, but not because we’re blanketed in dog hair). And no date night worries “Is the dog OK?” Still wanted a dog because well, I need to nurture and plants don’t wag.

So this Independence Week I say, it’s possible to want less independence. David and I have been coming and going as we please for a year but that ended last Friday, New Puppy Adoption Day. With the help of the wonderful folks of Copper’s Dream, we rescued 3 month old Gracie from a shelter in rural California. Now she’s home, with us.

We’re less independent but more whole.

Say, "Glad to be home, Gracie!"
